Volvo revealed the first images of the all-new XC70 earlier this month. Now, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released full images and specifications of the model, confirming a 2025 launch date in the Chinese market. The Volvo XC70 has an overall length of 4,815 mm, a width of 1,890 mm, a height of 1,650 mm and a wheelbase of 2,895 mm. Compared to the XC90, the new model is 137 mm shorter and has a wheelbase of 89 mm, so the car is positioned in a lower segment, aimed at customers who need a moderate CUV, flexible in the city but still spacious enough for family needs.
The new generation of the XC70 marks a complete change in design. The car abandons the traditional wagon shape, replacing it with a modern crossover style, with many similarities to the Volvo EX90 - the company's flagship electric SUV. The Volvo XC70 features a fully enclosed grille combined with an active airflow control system to optimize cooling and aerodynamics. The Matrix LED lights are arranged vertically, above which is the signature "Thor's hammer" daytime running light strip.
Details such as flush door handles, aerodynamic wheels (19-21 inches), plastic body cladding and a fixed panoramic glass roof further emphasize the new design direction. The XC70 is equipped with an extended-range plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV), combining a 161-horsepower 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a battery pack that comes in two options: lithium iron phosphate or ternary lithium-ion. Although full performance details have not been released, Volvo claims the XC70's pure electric range can reach up to 200 km, a figure that surpasses most current PHEV models. Volvo says the new XC70 is built on the SMA (Sustainable Modular Architecture) platform and serves as a “middle ground” in the transition to electric vehicles. For customers who are skeptical about charging infrastructure, ownership costs or long wait times for EVs, a long-range PHEV like the XC70 is the perfect balance between green technology and practicality.
Although it is not clear whether this model can be distributed in Vietnam or not, if it is distributed, the XC70 promises to be a formidable competitor in the hybrid electric SUV segment, where brands such as Toyota, BMW or Mercedes-Benz are also promoting their products.
