Nico Williams is becoming a hot name in the summer of 2025. |
Bild reports that Bayern Munich have not given up on the race to sign the Athletic Bilbao striker. The Bavarian club is said to have offered Williams a new contract, promising him a salary of €12 million (£10.3 million) per season if he rejects a move to Barcelona and joins the Allianz Arena.
Bayern are hoping for a surprise scenario, as Barcelona are having trouble registering the player and paying the transfer fee. Athletic Bilbao president Jon Uriarte has taken a firm stance that Barcelona must pay Williams' release clause in full in one go.
“We have not given the green light for any negotiations. If Barcelona want Nico, they must pay the full amount stipulated in the agreement, and it must be paid in one lump sum,” Uriarte stated in El Pais .
The Athletic Bilbao president's statement comes as Barca have reached an agreement with Nico Williams. The player has agreed to join the reigning La Liga champions for the 2024/25 season on a contract that runs until June 2031.
The Spanish winger is expected to receive a salary of around 7-8 million euros per year after tax at Barca, far less than the salary offered by Bayern. However, the major issue for Barca is the financial options to resolve the 58 million euro release clause.
Typically, clubs wanting to activate a player's release clause have to pay cash upfront, plus additional fees that could bring the total to €62 million. This is something Barca absolutely does not want, given their current financial situation.
