Simulation of the heliosphere protecting the solar system

A team led by space physicist Merav Opher of Boston University (USA) believes that the cause of Earth's most recent ice age came from space, specifically a space cloud.

The report, published in the June issue of the journal Nature Astronomy, is the first study to suggest that climate change on Earth during the Ice Age may have been influenced by a collision between the solar system, including Earth, and an interstellar object.

According to Opher's team, the Solar System is surrounded by the heliosphere, a "shield" formed by charged particles released from the sun.

The heliosphere protects the Earth and other planets from cosmic radiation and affects the ability of solar planets to support life.

According to the analysis of researchers, the ice age on Earth was caused by climate change but probably originated from the collision of the solar system with a space cloud. This cloud was large enough to affect the entire heliosphere.

To draw the above conclusion, the team of experts used data from the all-sky survey called HI4PI, collected jointly by two of the world's largest radio telescopes in Effelsberg (Germany) and Parkes (Australia).

They discovered that the solar system may have passed through a cold cloud 2 to 3 million years ago, when the Ice Age began. This is an extremely exciting discovery, and experts plan to continue research in this direction in the hope of making more discoveries in the future.
