Earthquake causes Japan's coastal area to expand (Screenshot: NHK).
According to the research results of a research team led by Associate Professor Gotou Hideaki of Hiroshima University, the earthquake and tsunami in Ishikawa Prefecture on January 1 caused ground displacement.
The study was conducted mainly using aerial photographs taken after the January 1 earthquake in Japan and in the area along the northeastern coast of the Noto Peninsula.
The results showed that the earthquake caused the land to rise almost throughout the above area and expanded the coastal land, in some places expanding up to 175m in Kawaura district, Suzu city.
In total, the expansion area is about 2.4 square kilometers, the researchers said. Some ports in the northern part of the peninsula have almost dried up.
Satellite images taken on January 2 showed that seawater had disappeared from a port in Ozawa Ward, Wajima City, which was hardest hit by the earthquake. This was due to the rising of the ground, Gotou said.
He added that his team had confirmed tsunami waves as high as 3 meters in the Horyu district of Suzu City. He noted that active faults are located all over Japan and can cause huge damage when they move, so he advised people to check if there are any faults in their area.
