A trade official working in Geneva said the chairman of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) announced that China announced the decision to appeal last month.
Previously, on August 16, the WTO ruled in favor of the US, concluding that China had violated international trade rules when it imposed additional tariffs on US goods in response to Washington's tariffs on steel and aluminum.
The committee stated that China's additional tax measures were "inconsistent" with the provisions of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
The US-China trade dispute began in 2018, when then-US President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminum imported from several countries, including China.
In response, China brought the dispute to the WTO and imposed tariffs on $3 billion worth of US imports.
In December 2022, the WTO ruled that Mr Trump's initial steel tariffs violated global trade rules.
President Joe Biden's administration has responded to the ruling and the tariffs remain in place.
