Elon Musk's X and Starlink face fines of nearly $1 million a day

Elon Musk's X and Starlink companies are facing huge fines of nearly $1 million a day in Brazil for allegedly circumventing the law.

Brazil’s Supreme Court has fined social network X up to 5 million reals, or $920,000 a day. Starlink – SpaceX’s satellite internet service – will continue to be jointly liable.

In late August 2024, Chief Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the suspension of social media platform X in Brazil. The court found that X had violated Brazilian law, which requires social media companies to hire a legal representative in the country and remove hate speech and other content deemed harmful to democratic institutions. The court also concluded that X had failed to suspend accounts that allegedly exposed the personal information of federal officers.

X recently switched to Cloudflare servers and appears to be using constantly changing dynamic IP addresses to allow more Brazilian users to access the service. Previously, Elon Musk’s company used static, specific IP addresses in Brazil that were easily blocked by Internet service providers on the orders of regulators.

In addition, Elon Musk also continuously attacked Chief Justice de Moraes, comparing him to many villains.

The new fines will begin on September 19. The court calculated the total fine based on X's "days of non-compliance" with previous suspension orders.

X said it had no intention of restoring access to users in Brazil. The restoration of service in Brazil was “accidental” after the company changed network providers.

Judge de Moraes ordered the national telecommunications agency Anatel to block the Cloudflare, Fastly and EdgeUno servers that the court said were created to circumvent the ban.

Data from Data Reportal shows that before the suspension, X had about 22 million users in Brazil.
