Specifically, on the Cua Dai, Ham Luong, Co Chien, and Hau rivers, the highest salinity levels of the day tended to gradually increase on May 28th and 29th, remaining high on May 30th before gradually decreasing from May 31st to June 4th. By June 5th and 6th, saltwater intrusion is likely to increase slightly again, but not to the severe levels seen at the end of May.
According to forecasts, the period of deepest saltwater intrusion and highest salinity levels on the rivers will mainly occur between May 28th and 30th. On the Cua Dai River, salinity at Binh Dai could reach approximately 22‰, and at Loc Thuan approximately 9.8‰. On the Ham Luong River, salinity at An Thuan is forecast to be around 21‰, and at Son Doc approximately 8.8‰. Meanwhile, on the Co Chien River, salinity in the Ben Trai area could reach up to 16.5‰.
Despite a gradual decrease since the end of May, saltwater intrusion continues to affect many riverside areas. The 4‰ salinity boundary is predicted to penetrate 31-37km inland from the river mouth. On the Cua Dai River, the salinity boundary could reach Phu Thuan commune; on the Ham Luong River, it could reach Tan Hao and Dong Khoi communes; on the Co Chien River, it could reach Huong My commune and Long Duc ward; and on the Hau River, it could reach Luu Nghiep Anh commune.
Furthermore, the 1‰ salinity boundary still has the potential to penetrate approximately 46-52km inland, affecting some production areas and sources of drinking water. On the Co Chien River, 1‰ salinity intrusion could affect the communes of Nhuan Phu Tan, Quoi Thien, and Trung Ngai.
The current risk level for saltwater intrusion is at level 1. Authorities advise people and localities not to be complacent and to continue closely monitoring salinity levels before operating sluice gates or using river water for production and daily life. Authorities recommend that people proactively store freshwater, use water sparingly, and plan appropriate care for crops and livestock to minimize damage caused by saltwater intrusion in the coming period.
