Building a chain of organic hybrid wild boar farming

(QNO) - With the expectation of creating a sustainable direction in agricultural development, contributing to increasing income for rural people, recently Mr. Phan Phuoc Dong (Ha Lam town, Thang Binh district) has built a model of a chain linking hybrid wild boar farming in an organic direction, in the spirit of mutually beneficial cooperation between households and businesses, ensuring output products according to clean food standards.

Solving difficulties for farmers

Mr. Phan Phuoc Dong has worked for many years in state administrative agencies. Being close to farmers, understanding the concerns of small-scale breeders and the lack of stable output, he always ponders the question: How to build a model that is both low-risk and brings sustainable economic value, taking advantage of household advantages?

During a business trip to the Southwest region, Mr. Dong had the opportunity to approach the hybrid wild boar farming model - a hybrid of native black pigs and Thai wild boars. This model is not new, but in the southern provinces it has shown clear effectiveness when organized in the direction of the value chain. From that idea, he decided to establish Bao Quan HD Production and Trading Company Limited, starting to deploy in Quang Nam from December 2024.

“Raising will no longer be lonely if there is risk sharing from the business. We have introduced a "5-package" model including: covering breeding stock, covering technical aspects, covering output, covering disease risks and covering sudden animal deaths. Right from the stage of selecting breeds, there is a clear contract. If the pig dies within the first 7 days, the company will reimburse 100%, from the 8th to the 14th day, support 50%. During the raising process, if the pig dies due to a disease that has been prevented, it will still be supported accordingly. It is these specific terms that make farmers feel secure to stick with the company,” Mr. Dong shared.

Currently, Bao Quan HD has signed contracts with 9 households, providing 42 breeding pigs, of which about 30 are pregnant from 1 to 3 months. Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam (Binh Dinh commune, Thang Binh) is one of the first households to join the chain. After renovating the barn, Ms. Cam adopted 3 sows and 1 boar from April 17.

The investment is not much, the care is moderate, and there is a unit that guarantees the purchase, so the farmer has less burden. I think this method is suitable for the conditions of the household. Now the pig is pregnant, in a few months I will have a litter of piglets. Roughly calculated, each 5-6 month old pig can be sold for 5 to 5.5 million VND, a fairly stable income.

According to the contract, the minimum purchase price for pigs is 85,000 VND/kg, with feed support at an encouraging ratio for self-mixing. Farmers are trained in techniques before receiving the breed and are monitored by technical staff throughout the breeding process.

Creating a clean food value chain

Not affiliated with farmers, Bao Quan HD Company also proactively invested in building its own pig farm with a scale of more than 100 pigs in Binh Phu to serve as a central breeding farm, aiming to expand to 300m² of breeding pens in June 2025. Being proactive in breeding helps the enterprise ensure the quality of the pig herd, while providing timely supplies to the increasingly expanding linkage system.

“The hybrid wild boar breed has good resistance and low care costs. The main diet consists of 70% roughage such as vegetables, corn, banana trees; 20% starch and only 10% supplemented with nutritional powder. Households with garden - pond - barn models can take advantage of agricultural by-products, rice residue, fish intestines, etc. to significantly reduce costs. The reproductive rate of female pigs is 90% or more, giving birth to 1 - 2 litters per year,” said Mr. Dong.

Although it has only been implemented in Quang Nam for less than a year, the model has created a positive effect. Many households in the communes of Binh Dinh, Binh Nguyen, Binh Phu... are learning about it to register to participate. In particular, Bao Quan HD is promoting the procedures to build a processing factory in Binh Nguyen commune, producing packaged clean pork, pre-processed foods such as ham, spring rolls, sausages... to supply to supermarkets and small retail channels in Tam Ky City, Da Nang.

Mr. Dong said: “We do not simply stop at the family farming model. The goal is to build a closed value chain from breeding - feed - farming - preliminary processing - consumption, according to organic food standards. In the next phase, the enterprise will register for product traceability, attach QR stamps for consumers to check the farming process, ensuring transparency and safety.”

The company is currently promoting cooperation with a number of units in Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in providing clean food originating from Quang Nam hybrid wild boar, while also researching to expand the market to neighboring provinces. Each month, a farm raising about 10 - 15 pigs can supply 800 - 1,000 kg of pork to the market.

[VIDEO] - Bao Quan HD's orientation in building a chain of links in the coming time:

We chose this direction because we believe that if there is a connection between farmers - businesses - markets, it will create a cleaner, safer and more humane production ecosystem. Every kilogram of meat that reaches consumers contains the responsibility and dedication of the entire production chain.
