Building a food system transformation plan in Vietnam

(Chinhphu.vn) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will closely coordinate with 47 domestic and foreign partners within the framework of the Partnership Agreement on Food System Transformation - contributing to sustainable development goals, ensuring food and nutrition security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and effectively adapting to climate change in Vietnam.

Today (June 24), the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , in coordination with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and relevant parties, organized a consultation workshop on the Draft Detailed Plan for implementing the National Action Plan on transforming the food system (FS) to be transparent, responsible and sustainable in Vietnam by 2030.

The consultation workshop is an important step to concretize the goals and tasks into actions to implement the National Action Plan for Transforming the LTTP System in Vietnam in the context that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is leading the development of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) version 3.0, including emissions from the agricultural sector, while promoting the achievement of Vietnam's sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Do Anh Tuan, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said: " Food and nutrition security, natural disasters and climate change, environmental protection and biodiversity conservation... are issues that have become more urgent than ever and now - and not at any other time - is the time for us to act immediately to protect our own existence and that of future generations. 'Sustainable production and consumption' and 'Transforming sustainable food systems' are among the contents that we can all act immediately, contributing to the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals".

At the event, Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Vietnam, co-chair of the meeting, also emphasized: "The detailed implementation plan (PIP) needs to be developed in accordance with the context of Vietnam, accurately reflecting baselines and priorities, clearly defining responsibilities and timelines, and ensuring the most effective use of existing resources. In particular, the PIP also needs to clearly demonstrate mechanisms for mobilizing investment and innovation from the private sector, in line with the Government's Resolution on promoting private economic development ".

At the meeting, delegates shared lessons learned on transforming the food safety system among countries, the progress of implementing the National Action Plan (issued under Decision 300/QD-TTg) at the central and local levels, and provided comments on the draft Detailed Implementation Plan (PIP) and priority activities of 5 interdisciplinary technical groups on policy institutions, ecological agriculture, nutrition and local food diversity, food loss and waste, and sustainable distribution and consumption. Along with the general discussion, delegates also participated in discussions in 5 technical groups to review ongoing activities, propose key priority tasks from domestic and international partners to complete the detailed implementation plan of 37 tasks in the National Action Plan on transforming a transparent, accountable and sustainable food safety system in Vietnam by 2030.

The event marked the close cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and 47 domestic and foreign partners within the framework of the Partnership Agreement on Transforming the Food System – contributing to the goals of sustainable development, ensuring food and nutrition security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and effectively adapting to climate change in Vietnam.
