Touching story of orphan boy who becomes "eyes" for blind mother at Vietnamese Family Shelter

The situation of Thi Van Nam (2013) in episode 147, a 7th grade student at Phan Boi Chau Secondary School, made artists Huynh Lap, BigDaddy, and Emily feel sorry. Nam currently lives with his mother and grandmother in Thang Dien commune, Da Nang city. His mother - Thi Thi My Hoa (1977) was born blind, a single mother, so since childhood Nam has never known who his father is. The only support for the mother and son is his grandmother, Mrs. Truong Thi Phien (1937).

At a young age, Thi Van Nam has already taken on the responsibility of housework, becoming the spiritual support and eyes for his blind mother.

Because of her visual impairment, Ms. Hoa cannot work and mostly stays at home. She is shy and reluctant to communicate. “I feel very sad and sorry for myself because I gave birth to my child but have never seen her face even once. I am afraid that she will not grow up to be a good person. Every day, I do not know what she does or where she goes. When she comes home from school, I say “Mom” and then I know she is home,” Ms. Hoa choked up.

Previously, Mrs. Phien was a farmer, growing a few crops around the house to support her family. But in recent years, she suffered from severe heart failure, had to undergo heart stent surgery, her health declined, she was often hospitalized, and was no longer able to work.

Unable to hold back her emotions, Ms. Hoa choked up with tears as she told about her journey as a single mother with visual impairment, fearing that her son would lack both material and emotional support.

Since then, the three of them have been living off of Phien’s 500,000 VND in senior citizen benefits and Hoa’s 1 million VND in disability benefits each month. Even though they spend frugally, this amount is still not enough to cover their expenses.

The difficult life often makes Nam skip breakfast or eat only cold rice and instant noodles before going to school. A full breakfast is a luxury for him. The lack of love from a complete family makes Nam become self-conscious and quiet. When he feels sad, he just quietly finds a hidden corner to cry, not wanting anyone to see. Nam's biggest dream is to feel the love of a father he has never met and hopes that his mother can see his face. He also longs to organize a birthday party for his mother so that she can be happy like everyone else.

Nam is a sensible boy, always proactive in helping his grandmother and mother with housework, taking care of his mother in daily activities and walking around the yard with his mother. For Ms. Hoa, this trip to film the program Vietnamese Family Home is the farthest trip she has ever taken. Her biggest wish is that her son will grow up, be independent and be able to take care of himself in the future.

The artists could not hide their sadness when witnessing Thi Van Nam's situation. MC Huynh Lap choked up, saying that Nam was too young to shoulder so many responsibilities, studying, doing housework and becoming the "eyes" for his blind mother.

Singer Emily was moved to see Nam so understanding, to the point that he seemed to have lost his innocence and rarely smiled like other children his age. Facing the misfortune of the 12-year-old boy, the female singer cried and hugged Nam to encourage him.

Backstage, Emily was still moved after witnessing the difficult stories of the children in the program. She shared that despite her busy artistic work, especially during the holidays, she and her husband BigDaddy always prioritize spending time with their family, especially their children. “ Sometimes, when we perform abroad for 1 or 2 weeks, we ask our grandparents for support. The children are also very understanding of their parents, and we make up for it with family trips ,” Emily said.

Singer couple Emily - BigDaddy emotionally shared about child-rearing and family values when witnessing difficult situations on the show.

The singer said that in daily life, she takes care of the children, while BigDaddy plays and entertains them. The two sometimes share roles in raising them. “ Usually I will play the role of being difficult, but if I am too 'tense', BigDaddy will calm me down, and vice versa. We always try to create a balance in raising our children ,” she shared.

In addition to the words of encouragement, the Vietnamese Family Home team helped Nam prepare a cake to fulfill his wish for his mother's birthday. The image of the boy holding the cake and sending his wishes to his mother moved many people to tears. Although Ms. Hoa could not see it, she was also moved by her son and everyone else's words.

In the challenge, BigDaddy and his wife Emily actively participated in supporting the families. During a game, BigDaddy had an accident where his pants were torn. Emily immediately ran to cover for her husband. Without stopping the recording, the male rapper borrowed a towel to wrap around himself, continued the competition and gave priority to the families before changing clothes to complete the recording.

Hoang Ngoc Bao Khanh's family came in second.

After completing the challenges, Tran Thi Thuy Tien's family ranked third, receiving a prize of 18 million VND. Hoang Ngoc Bao Khanh's family came second with 24 million VND. Thi Van Nam's family won first prize, with a total prize of 55 million VND.

To accompany the characters, rapper BigDaddy and singer Emily decided to use their own money to give Thuy Tien's family (3rd place) an additional 30 million VND. In addition, the two guests also gave Bao Khanh and Van Nam's families an additional 20 million VND each.

The audience and donors present at the recording session joined hands to donate more than 420 million VND to 3 families. The "huge" amount of money is a strong proof of the spirit of "the rich help the poor" that the program Vietnamese Family Warmth always shares and spreads.

Thus, after the support of the artists and the donations from the audience and benefactors, the total amount of money the program sent to all 3 families was nearly 600 million VND. Of which, 97 million VND was the bonus from Hoa Sen Group .
