At 10:00 p.m. on August 5, the Van Don Special Zone Medical Center received an urgent notice from the Thang Loi Medical Station about the case of a pregnant woman named BTA (29 years old, residing on Thang Loi Island), first-time pregnant, 37 weeks and 2 days pregnant, with severe abdominal pain and signs of premature labor. Assessing this as an emergency situation, the Center immediately activated the internal “red alert” procedure, mobilizing an external emergency team to approach Thang Loi Island in heavy rain and rough seas, making it impossible for civilian boats and ships to operate.
The emergency team, including Master Pham Quoc Viet, Head of the Organization and Administration Department; Doctor CKI Bui Thanh Tuan, Head of the Department of Reproductive Health Care and Obstetrics; midwife Truong Thi Thanh Hoa and young doctor Nguyen Thanh Trung, quickly crossed the sea to the island. After nearly 1 hour of overcoming the big waves, the emergency team approached the pregnant woman and conducted an examination. Through clinical assessment, the patient showed signs of difficult labor: the uterus was fully dilated, the head was high, and the pelvis was narrow. To ensure the safety of the mother and fetus, the team decided to transport the pregnant woman to the mainland for an emergency cesarean section.
On the way to Van Don Special Zone Medical Center, the mother was closely monitored for vital signs, fluid infusion, anti-spasmodic and ventilation. The entire transport and treatment process was carried out strictly and in accordance with professional regulations.
At 0:00 on August 6, the mother was taken to the Medical Center in stable condition. The surgery was performed urgently shortly after, and the baby girl weighing 2.4 kg was born safely, bringing joy to the family and medical team. Currently, both mother and baby are in stable health and are being cared for at the Department of Reproductive Health Care and Obstetrics.
According to Dr. Bui Thanh Tuan, this is not the first time the emergency team has had to cross the sea in bad weather. But every time they receive a mission, the doctors and nurses are ready to go, with the highest desire to protect the lives of patients, especially in remote islands.
Van Don Special Zone Medical Center is a grassroots unit, playing an important role in taking care of the health of people in coastal and island areas, where natural conditions are harsh, emergency care and patient transport are potentially risky. However, the team of doctors and nurses here always demonstrate a sense of responsibility, are ready to overcome difficulties, and are devoted to the health of the people.
