This is a figure worth considering, although the survey scope is still limited. This shows that there are still gaps in reproductive health care for female workers, mainly due to subjectivity and fear from the workers themselves. At the same time, there is also a part of the responsibility from businesses, employers and unions.
Not long ago, Lao Dong published an article about a large garment company in Vietnam, stating that 90% of the company’s employees are female, with about 2,800 people. During a reproductive health checkup program with nearly 2,500 female employees coming for checkups, doctors discovered dozens of female employees with fibroadenoma. Some pregnant or breastfeeding employees were found to have breast abscesses. What is worrying is that the majority of female employees do not want to have gynecological exams to prepare for safe childbirth.
Another survey by Marie Stopes Vietnam showed that 20% of pregnancies among female workers in many factories were unintended and about 40% of female workers quit their jobs after giving birth. This fact reflects that not paying attention to reproductive health will put female workers at a disadvantage, affecting the family economy as well as causing problems in labor and production.
In the Trade Union organization system, the Women's Union Committee has the task of advising the Executive Committee of the Trade Union at the same level: Participating in the development and implementation of regimes, policies and laws related to female workers; on gender, gender equality, for the development of women; female cadre work, population, reproductive health; family and children's work; organizing movements among female union members; representing and participating in solving issues directly related to female workers and children...
In fact, women's work has been effective in many areas, including efforts to invest in reproductive health care for female workers in their respective fields, but there are still many difficulties. One reason is the thin workforce. Women's work committees usually have only 1-2 people, except for large units with up to 3-4 people, which cannot supervise, guide, and closely monitor lower-level unions. On the other hand, initiative and creativity are still not high.
Therefore, when implementing and carrying out Resolution 02 of the Politburo on innovation of organization and operation of Vietnam Trade Union, innovation and improvement of the effectiveness of women's activities in caring for and protecting the health of female workers and laborers must be a focus. Only then will workers, especially female workers, not "swim alone" and lack self-care, leading to unfortunate consequences that workers, their families and society must bear.
