DNVN - YouTube, the popular video sharing platform, is testing a new Premium package called "Premium Lite", which promises to offer fewer ads at a much lower price than the current Premium package.

According to Engadget, a website specializing in technology analysis and reviews, some users discovered YouTube's new subscription package through recent "rumors" on social networks. Shortly after, a representative of Google - YouTube's parent company - confirmed that they were testing this service package with a limited number of accounts in Germany, Australia, and Thailand.
The Premium Lite plan is rated to help users not be bothered by most video ads, except for music-related content. However, short videos (Shorts) and ads will not interrupt users when searching and browsing information. YouTube Shorts is YouTube's short video platform, where users can upload and share videos up to 60 seconds long.
Notably, this is not the first time YouTube has tested the Premium Lite package. Previously, in 2021, the platform tested it in Europe but then discontinued this option in October 2023. Although this package does not include features such as offline viewing or background video playback, it still ensures that users do not have to watch ads like the regular Premium version.
For users in Australia, the new Premium Lite plan costs AU$9/month (US$6), which is significantly lower than the regular Premium plan at AU$17/month (US$11.4).
According to technology experts, this experimental move by Google could help the company attract more paying users, especially after strong measures to prevent users from using ad blockers. A survey in November 2023 by data consulting firm All About Cookies found that many YouTube users were considering using ad blockers after Google's measures. Specifically, 22% of those surveyed said they were looking for ways to continue using ad blockers, while 16% reduced their time on YouTube and 15% looked for alternative video platforms.
Only 12% of respondents said they would be willing to buy YouTube Premium, and 11% decided to stop using ad blockers. When asked about a reasonable price for Premium, 23% suggested it should be under $5 a month, while 14% said it would be under $10. In the US, YouTube Premium has increased to $14 a month since its last price increase in July 2023.
