A virus breaks out in Seoul, South Korea, turning people into zombies. In the chaos, father Lee Jung-Hwan takes his 15-year-old daughter Soo Ah away from the zombie siege, and takes a car back to a remote but peaceful countryside to take refuge. However, Soo Ah is infected with the virus and gradually turns into a zombie. Unable to bear to kill his daughter, and discovering that she still has humanity, Lee Jung-Hwan is determined to train Soo Ah to become a harmless zombie. With the support of his biological mother and best friend, Lee Jung-Hwan begins a journey of taming zombies with many funny and sad situations. However, his family's hiding of a zombie in the house is eventually discovered by others. Incidents continue to occur, but no matter who is chasing Soo Ah, including the army, Lee Jung-Hwan is determined to protect his daughter to the end, even sacrificing himself...
Making zombie comedies is not new to Korean cinema, but with “Daddy’s Sweet Zombie”, the idea of taming zombies and turning infected people back to normal is a first. Adding to the depth of family affection, especially warm father-son love, helps the film score points with the audience.
For more than half of the film, the audience laughed continuously with cute and charming humorous situations. From the scene where the father and son pretended to be zombies to escape the infected crowd to the tragicomic training process of the father and son, to sending Soo Ah to study at the village school... The grandmother and Lee Jung-Hwan's close friend also contributed significantly to making the audience laugh with natural and familiar comedy pieces. The film also paid attention to logic, solving problems neatly and reasonably. For example, building the character Soo Ah who was infected but still had human nature, could understand and follow training, could dance and express emotions of love and hate... was the basis for the father to hold on to the fragile hope that his child would return to normal. Or the explanation for the miracle that happened at the end of the film, when all efforts and sacrifices were rewarded, when the infected person had a chance to recover...
The family affection in the film really touches the audience. A grandmother loves her children and grandchildren with all her heart; a younger brother always does the best for his sister and niece; a father is willing to sacrifice himself to save his daughter... The mysteries about the circumstances of Lee Jung-Hwan and his daughter when revealed further increase the drama of the film. In the end, the wicked will be punished, and the good will be blessed.
The acting of the actors is one of the film's strong points. Actor Jo Jung Suk, who plays the father Lee Jung-Hwan, continues to prove his ability worthy of the reputation of "box office star". Young actress Choi Yu Ri, who plays Soo Ah, captivates the audience with her expressions when she turns into a zombie. The supporting actors all have interesting personalities and perform well, contributing to the completeness of the film.
