10X once had no English foundation, broke through to become valedictorian, passed 2 top universities

(VTC News) - Before passing two major universities and founding a free English teaching project, Nguyen Nam Bao Ngoc was a person who had lost his roots and was self-conscious about his foreign language skills.

Nguyen Nam Bao Ngoc (born in 2006, Ca Mau) was the valedictorian of the English major at Phan Ngoc Hien High School for the Gifted. During 12 years of high school, the 10X won a series of titles such as: Second prize in the national English speaking contest, bronze medal in the 30/4 Olympic English... In addition, Bao Ngoc also owns more than 30 foreign language certificates from prestigious centers around the world. In the recent high school graduation exam, the female student continued to extend her academic achievements by enrolling at 2 major universities - the Diplomatic Academy and the Foreign Trade University in Hanoi. Looking at those impressive achievements, few people know that Bao Ngoc used to be a girl who was self-conscious about her foreign language skills.

Winning over yourself

Ever since she was little, Bao Ngoc has always received support from her mother in her studies. Her mother often accompanies her in most subjects, except English. However, because she does not have a scientific learning path like many of her peers, by the time she reached 6th grade, Bao Ngoc knew almost nothing about this foreign language.

“Every time I went to foreign language class, I felt very scared, I almost didn't understand anything,” the female student said. At the end of 6th grade, although she achieved the highest score in most subjects, her English results were not as expected by Bao Ngoc. Realizing that the coping mindset did not help her improve, plus the words of her deskmate at that time "without a mother, you can't do anything" made the 10X motivated. From then on, the female student's journey to conquer English began. In addition to class time, Bao Ngoc attended courses at the center, then went home to study and practice tests. Every day, she spent up to 6 hours studying English. During 1 year of studying, the female student solved about 300 test questions. After only one year, Bao Ngoc had completely erased her roots, by studying the entire English grammar program from grade 6 to grade 12.

In the summer of 7th grade, 10X was selected to participate in a student exchange program in the US. During that trip, she passed the English test with excellent results and received a scholarship to Balboa High School (USA). However, at that time, the COVID-19 epidemic was complicated, the female student had to return home to study online. Studying at two schools in Vietnam and the US at the same time was a process of persistent and tireless efforts by Bao Ngoc. Studying 2 sessions at school during the day, at night when everyone in the family fell asleep, the female student's room continued to be lit up to participate in online learning with teachers at Balboa High School. Not to mention, the schedule of the school's excellent student team and extra classes at the center made 10X always overloaded. "There were busy days with a tight schedule, I only drank milk tea to survive. Thinking back on that time, I felt like I was "abusing" myself," Bao Ngoc said.

Teach English for free

In addition to her excellent academic achievements, Bao Ngoc is also a multi-talented girl, participating in many extracurricular activities and movements of the Youth Union of Ca Mau province... Notable among them is the project "Nguoi yeu Anh - Here there is an English root" founded by the female student herself.

“Realizing the importance of English in the current period of international integration, I hope to share the knowledge I have accumulated with everyone, to develop English skills together,” said the 10X Ca Mau, adding that the project was established to provide free support to students who want to learn English but do not have the means.

Officially established in early 2022, the project opened online classes, 1-2 sessions per week, each session lasting 2 hours, to consolidate knowledge for students according to the lesson plan compiled by Bao Ngoc. Her online classes at times attracted up to 500 students, not only students from all over Vietnam but also students from Japan, Korea... In addition, Bao Ngoc also opened 3 direct classes in Ca Mau for students in difficult circumstances. All are taught for free by 10X. According to the female student, the good news is that through each course, the English communication skills of the students have clearly improved. Seeing the effectiveness, many students and parents have introduced more people to register. The number of students has gradually increased. Not only teaching for free, the "Nguoi Yeu Anh" project also launched a scholarship fund to support students who have made a lot of progress during the course. All the funds for the scholarship fund were raised by Bao Ngoc, from prize money, part-time work money to personal lucky money contributions. "This is a non-profit project, so I refuse to accept any donations because I don't want it to lose its original nature and mission. The more people I can help, the happier I am and the more meaningful my life feels," the female student expressed.

With his constant contributions to the community, Nguyen Nam Bao Ngoc was honored to become one of 20 outstanding individuals nationwide, awarded the Youth Living Beautifully by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union and was recognized as an Advanced Youth Following Uncle Ho's Teachings nationwide in 2023. "A saying that I really like, and is also my motto in life up to now - "a beautiful flower not only beautifies itself but also beautifies the whole flower garden. If there are more beautiful flowers, our country will become more developed, civilized, and progressive" , Bao Ngoc hopes that the spirit of responsibility for the community will be spread more widely to today's young generation. With studying at two universities in Hanoi , Bao Ngoc will become much busier in the coming time. However, the 10X affirms that he will continue his volunteer projects and activities, living and dedicating himself to the Fatherland.
