The festival was assigned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to chair and coordinate with the Vietnam Stage Artists Association and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh to organize.
The National Cheo Festival is a large-scale art activity organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism every three years to summarize and evaluate the quality of creation, staging and performance of Cheo art by art units nationwide.
This is also an opportunity to honor collectives and individuals who have made many contributions to the work of preserving and promoting the value of Cheo art - a unique national theatrical form, rich in identity and vitality in the spiritual life of Vietnamese people.
The 2025 National Cheo Festival is an artistic playground for artists, actors, musicians, directors, painters, choreographers, etc. to demonstrate their talents, exchange and share creative experiences, thereby affirming the position of Cheo stage in the general picture of Vietnamese performing arts in the period of integration and development.
The festival also offers the public an opportunity to enjoy unique and vibrant Cheo plays, created on the basis of traditional art but with the breath of the times, contributing to enriching people's spiritual life.
This year's festival brings together the participation of 11 professional Cheo art units from many provinces and cities across the country, including: Vietnam National Traditional Theater, Hanoi Cheo Theater, Military Cheo Theater, Ninh Binh Traditional Art Theater, Hai Phong Traditional Theater, Hung Yen Cheo Theater, Lam Son Thanh Hoa Art Theater, Phu Tho Province Lac Hong Theater, Bac Ninh Cheo Theater, Quang Ninh Art Troupe, Thai Nguyen Province Ethnic Arts Troupe.
Nearly 900 artists, actors and musicians attending the Festival will bring to the audience 21 Cheo plays with investment in both ideological content and staging, demonstrating the dedication, talent and serious working spirit of art units across the country.
According to regulations, each play has a duration of 90 to 120 minutes. Artists and actors playing the main and secondary roles cannot participate in more than 2 plays at the Festival. The works must express a clear theme, promote beauty and human values, be predictive, have a positive impact on social life, contribute to promoting cultural values and the strength of the Vietnamese people in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.
In addition, the work must also achieve high aesthetic value, with new creative exploration of art through the actors' technical handling of acting based on the basic principles and characteristics of the Cheo art form. The creativity of the participants in the play must be unified, creating a complete play with a unified style.
The Festival's Art Council consists of prestigious artists, researchers, managers, and experts in the field of Cheo theater, ensuring objective, fair, and scientific evaluation.
The Festival's award structure includes: Gold Medals, Silver Medals for plays with high content and artistic quality; Gold Medals, Silver Medals for individual performing artists. In addition, there is 1 excellent award (if any) for each creative component in the plays participating in the Festival, including: scriptwriter; director; musician; art designer; choreographer.
