What to study in 2025 to avoid getting 'lost' in the wave of technology?

Not “Which school should I get into with enough points?”, but “What major should I study to avoid unemployment?” – that is the real question of many 2007 students and their parents when entering the stage of finalizing their wishes.

Vaguely choosing a major, following the trend and the price to pay

"In the digital age, a sustainable career starts with understanding your own abilities, identifying social needs, and choosing a learning path that connects both," said Ms. Vu Thu Chinh, Director of Admissions at Finland Metropolia Vietnam. "Scores help you get into university, but ability determines your job. Choosing a major based on trends or lack of knowledge is the path to unemployment," Ms. Chinh emphasized.

MSc. Vu Thu Chinh, Director of Admissions Finland Metropolia Vietnam, encourages candidates to carefully research information about the major and school before making a decision for the future.

According to the report on the labor situation in the first quarter of 2025 by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), the unemployment rate of young people aged 15-24 is up to 7.93%. This means that for every 12-13 young graduates, 1 person has not found a job.

The reason is not new: choosing a major lacks direction, many students choose to follow trends, family expectations, or only rely on scores without really understanding their own abilities or market trends.

As a result, students study too much theory, lack professional skills, lack practical experience, leading to working in the wrong field or unemployment. In fact, statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training in 2024 show that about 5-7% of university students have to re-apply after the first year - a number that shows the price of choosing the wrong major is lost time, money and opportunities.

The IT industry is highly differentiated - young people need to study in the right direction

The 4.0 industrial revolution is promoting a strong shift in the global labor market, especially in the field of Information Technology (IT) with a clear distinction between traditional IT and new generation IT.

As traditional IT such as system administration, hardware, and infrastructure gradually shrinks in role, smart IT – including AI, data science, software development, cybersecurity, and IoT – is emerging as the pillar of the digital economy . This shift requires a large workforce with systemic thinking, innovation capacity, and continuous adaptability.

According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2023, 7 out of 10 fastest growing occupations globally in the period 2025–2030 are in the smart IT group. Of which: Big Data Specialist grows by more than 100%; AI & Machine Learning Specialist by nearly 75%; FinTech Engineer, IoT Specialist, Cybersecurity Analyst have growth rates of 40–85%.

In Vietnam, IT recruitment organizations such as TopDev predict that the demand for recruiting IT personnel could reach about 150,000 people/year, but the supply can only meet about 30-40%, especially the shortage in new generation technology groups such as artificial intelligence, big data and IoT, showing the reality of "thirst" for high-quality human resources in Vietnam.

FPT Software Business Conference Shares Necessary Skills for Future Technology Engineers.jpg

Faced with the increasingly high demands of the market, Mr. Tran Huu Cong - Deputy Director of FPT Software's Global Product Engineering Division believes that young people pursuing the technology field need to understand correctly and sufficiently about smart information technology to master the future of the technology industry: "Smart technology is not simply using modern tools, but the process of creating knowledge from data. To do this, the future generation of engineers - which are digital age students - need to be prepared with this foundation right from school, instead of waiting until they start working to encounter reality."

Mr. Cong also emphasized: the learning environment combining school - lecturer - business is the foundation to help students practice problem-solving thinking, creativity and the ability to create real value - qualities that cannot be replaced by machines in the digital age.

Universities of Applied Sciences - Global Career Gateway for Technology Learners

In an era where technology is changing every day, IT students need more than just a degree – they need adaptability, problem-solving thinking, and the ability to innovate new technologies. That is also the philosophy of the Finnish university of applied sciences model – which emphasizes practicality and problem-solving ability. Finland Metropolia Vietnam – an international university program in cooperation between Metropolia University (Finland) and FPT University.

Here, students are trained in the direction of Smart Information Technology - focusing on technologies that shape the future of the digital economy such as: AI (Artificial Intelligence) - helping machines understand, learn and act; IoT (Internet of Things) - connecting the physical and digital worlds; Big Data - mining data to make smart decisions; Cloud & Cybersecurity - infrastructure and security platform for all digital systems.

Not just learning about technology – students learn how to apply technology to solve practical problems. That is the core difference of the program: theory goes hand in hand with real projects, working in groups with businesses right from the first year. Students will participate in product development, building digital solutions for real problems – from smart AI applications in all aspects of life to IoT systems in urbanization.

In particular, the Global Citizen Education Program for Finland Metropolia Vietnam students also focuses on improving English proficiency and developing essential 21st century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, debate, teamwork and problem solving.

Upon graduation, students receive a Bachelor of Information Technology degree from Metropolia University of Finland – a degree recognized throughout Europe and internationally. Academic values from Finland combined with the business ecosystem of FPT Corporation bring great advantages to students when entering the domestic and global labor market.

With an advanced training model and clear strategic orientation, Finland Metropolia Vietnam is contributing to redefining the university path - not only a place to impart knowledge, but also a foundation for students to develop comprehensively, master technology and integrate into the world confidently.
