Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine has just received information about a 6th year student (final year) of the school being scammed out of 7 billion VND in his account.

The student's family reported to the police and contacted the school to verify the information and coordinate the search for the student.

Continuously sending statements to parents to ask for billions

According to the report from MT's family (the female student who was scammed), at noon on May 23, Dung called her mother to tell her about the school's choice to send her to an international student exchange program in Germany. She asked her mother to deposit money into her account so that she could submit a statement to the school to apply for the exchange program.

After his parents deposited money into his account, MT continuously received statements from the top 10 to the top 5 (Photo: HN).

Then, on May 26, the family transferred 1.5 billion VND to the daughter's account.

Dung sent back a list of 10 student statements and said the school would prioritize the 5 students with the most statements to receive scholarships to study abroad. MT asked her parents to deposit more money into the account for the statement, and her family deposited an additional 1.48 billion VND into her daughter's account.

The next day, May 27, T. reported that he had not made it into the top 5 and wanted his parents to transfer more. His parents transferred another 2.02 billion VND to make it 5 billion.

Dung sent the statement but was still… out of the top 5 and begged her parents to send more money. The family sent another 500 million VND to Dung's account.

The next day, MT continued to send the statement and said that his friends had “surpassed” him, that he was not in the top 5 and asked his parents to send him more. Seeing that, the family borrowed and sent him another 1.5 billion VND.

Right after his parents sent more money, T. sent a statement saying he was in the top 5 but needed another 300 million VND to secure his spot.

At this point, feeling suspicious, the student's parents asked an acquaintance at the bank to check the balance in T.'s account. Only then did they find out... there was no money left in the child's account.

The family called, T. made an excuse that he couldn't come home from school, only replying that there was still 7 billion VND in his account. The family called and asked him to go to the bank to get a statement, T. replied that he was at the bank and then could not be contacted again.

The family went to T.'s place of stay and learned that he had not stayed there since May 14. He had not come to the hospital for his internship as planned since May 23. MT told his friends that he had gone home to visit his sick mother.

Fake school scholarship announcement

Along with the incident report, MT's family sent an electronic statement and a notice about the international student exchange program in Germany of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine below with the stamp and signature of the Vice Principal of the school.

A representative of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine confirmed that this announcement is fake. Up to this point, the school has not implemented any international study abroad or student exchange programs. Joint activities with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Federal Republic of Germany are only for students of classes in the Vietnamese-German Faculty of Medicine.

International student exchange programs, study abroad programs, etc. are all publicly posted by the school on the school's electronic information portal, and sent to students via personal online accounts or personal emails provided by the school to students.

“At first, when we learned about the student being scammed out of 7 billion VND, there was suspicion that the student was collaborating with scammers to scam his family, but it was confirmed that he was scammed. Now, he has returned home and is in a state of panic…”, the school representative shared.

According to the school representative, the scam is very sophisticated, they only need students to prove their financial status to be selected for the scholarship.

After the student proves, the scammers will “pump” the student down so that the student will continue to pay more money. When they know that the other side’s money source is exhausted, the scammers will notify the student that he or she has been accepted and ask the student to enter a link to complete the application. And so… all the money is lost.

In the past, the school has continuously warned students about fraud through scholarships to study abroad, financial proof and many other sophisticated forms of fraud.
