Investigators believe it was one of the most serious cash heists in Los Angeles history. The heist was carefully planned and calculated by a group of criminals who bypassed a sophisticated alarm system to gain entry to the vault.
Los Angeles police and the FBI are investigating a shocking vault heist in which thieves broke through the roof and broke the safe to steal $30 million in cash.
Los Angeles Police Department spokesman David Cuellar said the Easter Sunday robbery at GardaWorld in the northern suburb of Sylmar was one of the most serious in the city's history. The Los Angeles Times reported that the thieves broke through the roof and bypassed the alarm system to gain access to the vault inside the building. Investigators believe the robbery was the work of a sophisticated, calculated and well-planned gang.
Meanwhile, according to CBS News, the facility stored and processed large amounts of cash for other businesses, and the theft was not discovered until employees opened the vault on April 1. No arrests have been made and a manhunt is underway for those responsible.
The GardaWorld heist comes nearly two years after a gang of thieves stole $100 million worth of jewelry from a truck parked in a freeway parking lot on its way to a jewelry and gem show in Los Angeles.
