Get enough sleep before you leave

One of the most important factors when driving long distances is to make sure you get 7-9 hours of deep sleep the night before. According to Dr. Michael Breus, a sleep psychologist at the Los Angeles Sleep Institute (USA): "Not getting enough sleep significantly reduces the brain's ability to process situations and reflexes, almost equivalent to driving while drunk." Just one night of sleep deprivation doubles your risk of an accident on the highway.

Rest every 2 hours

Driving continuously for more than 2 hours makes the eyes and brain tired, leading to a state of unconscious driving, when you are still driving but your mind is no longer focused. Experts recommend that every 150 - 200km or 2 hours, stop the car, get out, walk around, stretch and breathe fresh air. A glass of cool water or some stretching exercises also help restore energy significantly.

Don't forget water and snacks

Hot weather can dehydrate you, making you feel tired and reducing your ability to concentrate. Keep a few bottles of water and some snacks in your car, such as fruit, nuts, or wholegrain crackers. Avoid sweets or greasy fast foods, as these can make you feel sluggish.

Avoid caffeine and energy drink abuse

While a cup of coffee may help you stay awake temporarily, don't overdo it. "Caffeine only helps fight sleepiness for a short time. After that, you're more likely to fall into a state of overwhelming fatigue, which is even more dangerous," says David Strayer, a driver behavior researcher at the University of Utah. Choose a natural solution: get enough sleep, rest at the right times, and stay hydrated.

Someone sitting in the passenger seat chatting

A passenger sitting next to you not only makes you feel safer, but also acts as a sensor for signs of fatigue. Light, positive conversation keeps your brain active, preventing sleep from creeping in.

Driving long distances in the hot summer is not only a challenge for the driver but also for the spirit. Staying alert, taking time to rest and taking care of your body are principles that cannot be ignored. Because just a moment of distraction, a short blink of an eye can also bring about undesirable consequences.
