The report of the General Statistics Office clearly shows that winter-spring rice output increased compared to 2024; key fruit trees and perennial industrial crops increased both in area and output compared to the same period in 2024. Pig and poultry farming developed well, the price of livestock and poultry meat was at a favorable level for people to expand the scale and improve the quality of livestock. Area plantation The new high, timber exploitation activities are promoted due to the high demand for timber export. Aquaculture production activities have achieved positive results thanks to the increased application of science and technology, the weather in the first months of the year is quite favorable for aquaculture exploitation.
Specifically, the winter-spring rice cultivation area nationwide in 2025 will reach 2,970.2 thousand hectares, an increase of 16.2 thousand hectares compared to the previous winter-spring crop. Northern localities will reach 1,050.9 thousand hectares, a decrease of 8.9 thousand hectares, mainly due to some localities converting part of the rice cultivation area to non-agricultural land, serving the expansion and construction of new industrial parks, urban areas, transport infrastructure works, public utilities and planting perennial trees, aquaculture for higher economic efficiency.
After harvesting winter-spring rice, farmers urgently plowed, repaired dams, and prepared fields for planting summer-autumn rice. As of June 20, 2025, localities across the country had planted 1,773.6 thousand hectares of summer-autumn rice, equal to 101.8% of the same period in 2024. The progress of planting summer-autumn rice this year is faster than the same period because farmers took advantage of favorable weather and widespread heavy rain to proactively plant early. Currently, summer-autumn rice in southern localities is in the tillering, panicle-forming, and ripening stages, and the rice fields are developing relatively well. Up to now, there are 241.7 thousand hectares of early summer-autumn rice in Mekong Delta for harvest, equal to 102.6% of the same period in 2024.
Along with rice cultivation, localities across the country are planting crops. The area of vegetables and beans of all kinds increased compared to the same period in 2024 because localities converted some winter crops to vegetable cultivation, while increasing the area of color crops on rice fields and intercropping with fruit gardens to meet market demand. However, the area of sweet potatoes, peanuts and soybeans continued to decrease compared to the same period in 2024, mainly due to low economic efficiency.
In the past 6 months, the pig herd has increased sharply again due to the strong shift of household farming to semi-industrial farming, linking with businesses, along with the price of live pigs in the first 6 months of the year at a favorable level for people to invest in expanding production scale.
Explaining the above phenomenon, the General Statistics Office emphasized that currently, the general trend is to switch to a biosafety livestock model, applying high technology, gradually professionalizing the production process from large enterprises to small-scale livestock households. To ensure the good development of livestock, disease prevention work needs to be implemented synchronously and effectively, dangerous infectious diseases such as African swine fever, avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease must be controlled promptly, minimizing damage and strengthening the trust of livestock farmers.
Aquatic product output in the second quarter of 2025 is estimated at 2,555.5 thousand tons, up 3.3% over the same period in 2024, other aquatic products reached 352.9 thousand tons, up 2.4%. In the first 6 months of 2025, aquatic product output is estimated at 4,550.9 thousand tons, up 3.1% over the same period in 2024; other aquatic products reached 663.6 thousand tons, up 2%.
In the second quarter of 2025, the area of newly planted concentrated forests is estimated at 109 thousand hectares, an increase of 19.8% over the same period in 2024. In the first 6 months of 2025, the area of newly planted concentrated forests is estimated at 153.5 thousand hectares, an increase of 18.9% over the same period in 2024.
The damaged forest area in the second quarter of 2025 was 631.8 hectares, down 30.8% compared to the same period in 2024. In the first 6 months of 2025, the whole country had 847.8 hectares of damaged forest, down 27.2% compared to the same period in 2024.
