7 foods beneficial for people with hypothyroidism

VnExpressVnExpress31/12/2023

Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory effects, and seaweed contains iodine, which is necessary for thyroid function.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate mood, metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Hypothyroidism occurs when the gland does not produce enough hormones to meet the body's needs. People with hypothyroidism often feel tired, depressed, suffer from constipation, and other health problems. Eat some of the following foods to help boost thyroid function.

Fresh fruits and vegetables

People with hypothyroidism often gain weight. Low-calorie foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables help with weight control. Blueberries, cherries, sweet potatoes, and green peppers are rich in antioxidants that reduce the risk of heart disease, a common complication in hypothyroidism.

People with this disease should limit cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage...) to 140g per day. Because they can block the thyroid's ability to absorb iodine. Iodine is a mineral necessary for normal thyroid function.

Nuts

A 2017 review from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, of 69 studies found that macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, and hazelnuts are high in selenium, which helps the thyroid function better. Eating 1-2 Brazil nuts or a small handful of other nuts is enough to get this nutrient.

Patients should pay attention to portion sizes because many nuts are high in fat. Walnuts can interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormones, so avoid eating them at the same time as taking medication.

Bean

Beans provide a great source of energy if hypothyroidism is causing you to feel exhausted. Beans contain protein, antioxidants, complex carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in fiber, which is beneficial for people with hypothyroidism who are constipated. Adults should only consume 20-35 grams of fiber per day, as excess fiber can interfere with treatment.

Whole grains

Constipation is a common symptom in people with hypothyroidism. Whole-grain cereals, breads, and pastas are high in fiber, which helps keep bowel movements regular. However, fiber can interfere with the action of synthetic thyroid hormones, so thyroid medications should be taken at least 4 hours before or after eating foods high in fiber.

Milk

Milk fortified with vitamin D improves TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels in people with hypothyroidism. Milk also contains calcium, protein and iodine, which are needed for thyroid function.

A condition related to hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, can lead to changes that contribute to gut problems like heartburn. Yogurt containing probiotics can help reduce this.

Fatty fish

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and sardines are good for people with diabetes. Uncontrolled hypothyroidism increases the risk of heart disease due to higher levels of bad cholesterol (LDL). Omega-3s reduce inflammation, support immunity, and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Fish also provides selenium (highly concentrated in the thyroid gland), which helps reduce inflammation. Vegetarians can get plenty of omega-3s from walnuts, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and edamame beans.

Seaweed

Seaweed contains fiber, calcium and vitamins A, B, C, E, K, and is high in iodine. Iodine is a precursor to thyroid hormone production.
