Eight fishermen were involved in an accident in the waters off Co To Island.

TPO - In the early morning of May 21st, the Border Guard forces of Quang Ninh province successfully rescued eight fishermen from Thanh Hoa province who were in distress in the waters off Co To island, bringing all of them and their essential belongings safely ashore.

According to initial information, at approximately 3:00 AM on the same day, the fishing vessel TH-92545-TS, while traveling in the area northeast of Bay Sao Island, within the Co To Special Economic Zone, Quang Ninh province, encountered bad weather, heavy rain, and darkness, severely limiting visibility. During its journey, the vessel collided violently with an underwater reef.

The collision caused a large hole in the bow section of the ship, allowing water to flood in rapidly, putting the vessel at risk of sinking and directly threatening the lives of the eight fishermen on board.

The vessel involved in the accident was approximately 18 meters long and 5.8 meters wide, equipped with a 360 horsepower engine. It was owned and captained by Mr. Hoang Van Tung (born in 1981, residing in Quang Xuong, Thanh Hoa ). There were also 7 other crew members from Thanh Hoa on board.

Immediately after receiving the report, the Co To Border Guard Station promptly deployed a task force of 5 officers and soldiers using a motorboat to brave the waves and reach the scene to organize the rescue. Thanks to the timely rescue, all 8 fishermen, along with many essential belongings and fishing gear, were brought ashore safely.

At the same time, the unit further reinforced its presence at Co To harbor with 9 additional officers and soldiers to assist with loading and unloading fishing gear, providing medical care, and stabilizing the morale of the fishermen in distress.

By the time authorities approached, the ship had already sunk halfway.

Currently, the fishermen's health and spirits are stable. The Co To Border Guard Station is coordinating with relevant authorities to develop a salvage plan and hire specialized rescue vessels to tow the damaged fishing boat to the Van Don Special Economic Zone for repairs and remediation.

Authorities advise fishermen to regularly update themselves on weather conditions, avoid traveling during heavy rain and poor visibility; and to thoroughly inspect their vessels, ensure they are fully equipped with life jackets and communication equipment, and to work in groups to provide timely assistance to each other in case of incidents at sea.
