The 2023 high school graduation exam has a higher level of differentiation than last year, and the new preferential scoring regulations have just been applied, so admissions experts predict that the admission scores to universities this year will decrease.

The "hot" majors of Polytechnic do not increase

At the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), admission combines many criteria such as the results of the capacity assessment test, the results of the high school graduation exam, high school academic scores, and other capacities (certificates, awards) accounting for 60 - 90% of the total enrollment target of the school this year.

The school has announced the minimum scores for the components including the 2023 Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment test score of 630/1,200 points; the 2023 high school exam score of 18/30 points (total score of 3 subjects calculated according to the admission combination); high school learning results score (according to the transcript): 18/30 points (total average score of 3 subjects according to the admission combination of 3 years of grade 10, 11, 12).

Candidates must achieve a score higher than or equal to the threshold for receiving applications for all three components in this method to be eligible to apply for admission under this method.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Thang - Head of Training Department, University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), in the current technology era, the majors of computer science, computer engineering, artificial intelligence, mechatronics... continue to attract students.

Besides, the "hot" majors of many years such as mechanical engineering, logistics and supply chain management, electronics - telecommunications, control and automation... are still highly competitive majors in enrollment.

"However, most schools have increased their quotas for these majors to meet the needs of learners. Therefore, it is predicted that the benchmark scores for "hot" majors this year will not increase. In addition, the high school graduation exam is considered more difficult than last year, especially the natural science exam, so the benchmark scores for average majors will probably decrease a bit.

"While the benchmark scores for selective majors such as thermal engineering, industrial maintenance, construction engineering, marine engineering... may decrease slightly compared to last year," Mr. Thang predicted.

Benchmark scores decrease due to increased targets

MSc. Pham Thai Son - Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade - said that from this year, the priority points for candidates will gradually decrease when the total score of 3 subjects in the high school graduation exam is 22.5 points or higher.

A student in region 1 who scores 22.5 or less will receive 0.75 regional priority points. However, if the candidate scores 27 points, the priority points will be reduced to 0.3, and if he scores 29 points, the priority points will be reduced to 0.1 regional priority points.

"Thus, the priority points in admission this year will be reduced. In addition, this year's high school graduation exam is unlikely to achieve high scores due to higher differentiation than last year. Meanwhile, the number of applications for early admission methods (high school transcripts and capacity assessment) has decreased by about 60%, showing that candidates have carefully considered their wishes and their own capacity.

Perhaps candidates only register their wishes early when their scores are close to the admission scores. In addition, the quotas of universities have increased a lot, so it is natural that the admission scores will decrease.

For example, our school has increased its quota by more than 2,200 (to 6,300). The majors with many opportunities to be admitted to the school are in the technical - technological fields such as electronics, mechatronics, automation, mechanics, thermal technology... If candidates have a score of 18 - 22, they will have a high chance of being admitted," Mr. Son shared.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry - said that this year, the admission score using the high school graduation exam score method is expected to decrease compared to last year. There are still quite a lot of quotas for this method at training institutions (mostly over 50%).

"Our school trains in many majors and fields, so there are majors with quite high admission scores, but there are also some majors with moderate scores (around 19 - 20 points) such as environmental groups, traffic construction, refrigeration...

For candidates who have been announced as early admitted but do not have their most desired wish, they can register for additional consideration using the high school graduation exam score method. The wishes considered using the high school graduation exam score must be placed first, then the wishes that have been announced as eligible for admission," Mr. Nhan noted.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Vu - Head of Admissions Consulting and Brand Development Department of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City - also commented that the standard score for this year's high school exam score will likely be stable or decrease slightly.

"Our school, although recruiting students through many methods, mainly reserves many quotas for considering high school exam scores , especially for the general program, which accounts for 90% of the quota. The school trains different programs and the standard scores will also be different. In previous years, the standard scores for the high-quality program were always slightly lower than the general program," said Mr. Vu.

* Master Cu Xuan Tien   (Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department, University of Economics and Law, Ho Chi Minh City National University): This year's high school graduation exam has a strong differentiation factor, the possibility of candidates achieving 9-10 points will not be many, while the average - good score range will be many. With such differentiation, the possibility of this year's university entrance score to enter this school will be the same as last year or decrease slightly. However, "hot" majors such as international business, e-commerce, international economics, marketing with high competition level that many candidates are interested in, the possibility of the standard score will not decrease.

Note the conditions for admission registration

On July 25, the Ministry of Education and Training will announce the threshold to ensure the quality of admission to teacher training majors and health majors with vocational certificates. Schools will announce the scores to receive applications for this method. In addition, many schools recruit students using their own methods using high school exam scores, so candidates need to carefully study the school's regulations before registering. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi - Head of Training Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy - noted: "Candidates do not register for groups of majors and training programs that do not meet the requirements. At our school, in addition to considering high school exam scores for group B, the school also considers in combination with foreign language certificates. These two methods are considered independently and have their own quotas. Therefore, candidates have the right to register for both methods to increase their chances of admission. I think this year's admission score may be equivalent or slightly lower than last year because the exam questions are well differentiated and the new preferential point policy is applied."

How is the review?

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, all candidates who have taken the 2023 high school graduation exam have the right to have their exam papers reviewed. The place where candidates registered to take the exam will receive the candidates' request for review within 10 days from the date of announcement of exam scores and transfer the data of candidates who have submitted their request for review to the examination council.

Within 15 days from the deadline for receiving appeals, the examination council must announce and notify the candidates of the appeal results. The examination council prints the certificate of examination results after the appeal and returns it to the candidates whose exam scores have been adjusted, and at the same time, withdraws and cancels the certificate of examination results before the appeal.

In case candidates do not agree with their high school exam scores, they should note the deadline for reviewing the exam on time. Accordingly, from July 18 to July 27, candidates can submit an application to review the 2023 high school exam scores. The review of high school graduation recognition must be completed no later than August 12.
