A local military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Yemeni soldiers were ambushed while they were on patrol in the Umayran Valley of the southern province of Abyan. Several other soldiers were wounded in the attack and received medical assistance.
Tensions are escalating in Abyan as Al-Qaeda takes advantage of the current instability in Yemen and gains a foothold in the locality. The terrorist group has been behind increasingly frequent attacks on government forces, intelligence officials and military infrastructure, exacerbating the situation in the war-torn Arab country.
In an effort to combat the terrorist threat, Yemeni government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have launched several large-scale military operations targeting Al-Qaeda hideouts in recent months.
However, they have failed to dislodge terrorist groups entrenched in the mountainous areas of Abyan and other neighboring provinces in southern Yemen.
