Alcaraz and Medvedev: Race for world number one

Báo Khánh HòaBáo Khánh Hòa26/05/2023

The tennis world is witnessing a generational shift. The “Big 3” are no longer dominant as Federer has retired; Nadal is both old and injured with no return date in sight; Djokovic still has the desire to conquer more Grand Slam titles but he is also 36 and is often eliminated by younger players.

There are many young players emerging but lacking consistency. At the moment, only two players, Alcaraz and Medvedev, are competing for the world number one position.

Alcaraz and Medvedev received good news, Djokovic dropped to world number 3 before Roland Garros 2023.

The Rome Open 2023 ended on May 21 in Italy, causing a series of changes in the world tennis rankings. In the ATP men's singles rankings, due to not defending the championship and only reaching the quarterfinals of the Rome Open 2023, Novak Djokovic lost 820 points, falling to 3rd place in the world.

The Serbian tennis player's number of weeks at the top of the world temporarily stopped at 387. Despite being eliminated in the third round of Rome, Carlos Alcaraz still received 45 points (he did not compete last year) and that was enough for the Spanish tennis player to return to the top spot. The 19-year-old athlete has now entered the 23rd week of holding the top spot in the rankings.

Rome champion Daniil Medvedev moved up a notch, the Russian player gained 1,000 points to become world number 2, now only 485 points behind Alcaraz. With less than 1,000 points separating the top 3 positions, the race for the world number 1 tennis title will be extremely tense when Roland Garros begins on May 28.

Rome runner-up Holger Rune (Denmark) added 510 points to move up to sixth place for the first time, taking over from his colleague Andrey Rublev (Russia). Hubert Hurkacz (Poland) moved up two places to take over from Cameron Norrie (UK) and Rafael Nadal (Spain).

Boris Becker has listed a number of young players who could threaten the dominance of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the coming time. The German tennis legend said: “Carlos Alcaraz became world number 1 after winning the US Open last year, that is the clearest proof

There are many other young players who are doing well, including Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune. Then we can't help but mention the Russians."

With the scores not too far apart, according to our prediction, whoever wins the upcoming French Open will take the world number one position. Perhaps it will be a two-horse race between Alcaraz and Medvedev.
