He stressed that Mainoo needs to prove himself to win a place in the starting line-up.
Mainoo had asked to leave in search of more playing time, but United were determined to keep him. The England international came on as a second-half substitute in the 3-2 win over Burnley before the international break and could be given a start in the Manchester derby this weekend, with Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount both injured.
“Like many players, Kobbie wants to play more. I don’t want him to think I’m just holding him back. I trust Kobbie, but he’s not a finished player. He can improve a lot,” Amorim said.
The Portuguese tactician believes Mainoo needs to improve his ability to change pace, understand his position better and make the most of his inherent technique. “He has to surpass Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro or Manu Ugarte – all of them are excellent players. The final choice is mine, and Kobbie has to prove himself worthy,” added Amorim.
Mainoo was a mainstay under Erik ten Hag, but the new system has made it difficult for him to break into the first team. However, Bruno's likely move to the No. 10 role amid a lack of midfield space will open up a great opportunity for the young talent.
Ahead of the 197th Manchester derby, Amorim also refused to compare his situation with Pep Guardiola after Man City lost two consecutive matches: “You can’t put them side by side. He always wins, so he can be comfortable with defeat. I have to prove myself every day here. Comparing me to Guardiola? That’s just a joke.”
