The device uses a vertical folding mechanism with an inner screen that does not leave a crease. This is an important improvement compared to the foldable smartphones currently on the market. When opened, the device is only 4.8 mm thin; when folded, it is about 9.5 mm thick – much thinner than current iPhone models. The foldable iPhone could have two screens: a 7.8-inch inner screen and a 5.5-inch outer screen. The main screen is roughly the same size as the iPad mini, allowing for convenient multitasking, reading news, and watching videos . Meanwhile, the secondary screen on the outside is compact enough to be used as an iPhone mini.
The foldable iPhone can integrate a total of 4 cameras, including 2 rear cameras with 48 MP resolution and 2 front cameras - one for use when the device is folded, one for use when opened. This is an optimal design for taking photos, video calling and FaceTime in all usage situations.
The frame uses a hinge made of stainless steel combined with titanium alloy. The outer shell can also be made of titanium to increase durability but still keep the weight light, suitable for the mechanical characteristics of the folding screen device. Apple will bring back Touch ID on this device instead of Face ID. The reason is that integrating two separate Face ID systems for two screens would be more complicated and expensive, and would also take up more internal component space.
The foldable iPhone will cost between $2,000 and $2,500, making it Apple's most expensive phone yet.
