The film tells the story of Cuong (played by Nguyen Quoc Hung) - a young man from a coastal area, with both talent and passion for music . He wanted to become an artist but his father did not like it, because he wanted his son to be more practical. After Cuong's father passed away, his musical dream was forced to be put on hold to take care of his family. Cuong made a living by fishing, married Hoa - his childhood sweetheart from the same hometown and was happy with his small family.

Then one day, this fisherman was faced with a torn choice between keeping his current peaceful life or pursuing the opportunity to become a singer - his great unfulfilled youthful aspiration. Cuong's beautiful, gentle and understanding wife supported him in returning to music, because she had fallen in love with Cuong when she saw him playing and singing on stage.

The Wooden Fish is filmed with frames and everyday moments from warm family life to the fishermen's fishing profession at sea, quite beautiful and artistic. The title of the film The Wooden Fish brings quite an interesting thought: are we resigned to being "wooden fish" that are rigid in both thinking and action or are we "fish" that freely swim and turn towards the sun? Another profound meaning from the film title is related to the percussion instruments in Eastern temples, symbolizing mindfulness and awareness.
