The Argentine government is accelerating the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in government administration and public policy planning.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Buenos Aires, the Argentine government recently announced the "Digital Social Clone" program, which uses AI to process large volumes of data from public and private sector agencies to predict social trends, assess policy impacts, and support decision-making.
The administration of President Javier Milei believes that this system will help improve administrative efficiency, reduce data fragmentation, and optimize public spending.
However, the opposition and many digital rights organizations have called on the Argentine Congress to investigate the project's transparency. Experts warn that the large-scale data centralization using AI could lead to the risk of misuse of personal information and expanded surveillance of citizens.
In fact, Argentina is one of the leading Latin American countries in experimenting with AI in the public sector. Since 2017, the Buenos Aires City Prosecutor's Office has developed an AI system called "Prometea" to automate judicial and administrative procedures.
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), from 2017 to mid-2020, Prometea assisted in handling 658 cases related to housing, employment, and the rights of persons with disabilities, with a predicted concordance rate of up to 90% in prosecutors' decisions.
Studies by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) show that this system helps shorten the time to process bidding documents from 90 minutes to just 1 minute, and reduces the time to resolve some cases from 167 days to 38 days.
Beyond the judicial sector, Argentina currently has more than 45 AI initiatives at the provincial and city levels, ranging from chatbots to assist citizens to early warning systems for school dropout risks in Mendoza, Entre Ríos, and Salta.
Nevertheless, experts believe that Argentina still lacks a comprehensive legal framework for AI in the public sector, particularly regarding data protection, accountability, and independent oversight mechanisms.
