Indonesia - ASEAN Chair 2023 has just held the 16th meeting of the ASEAN Committee on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (ACMW-16) online.
The meeting was attended by over 50 delegates from the ACMW focal points of all 10 ASEAN Member States (AMS) and the ASEAN Secretariat; representatives from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Labor Organization (ILO), and funding partners including Australia, Canada and the European Union (EU). Timor-Leste attended for the first time as an observer.
The meeting reviewed the progress of the implementation of the Plan of Action to Implement the ASEAN Consensus on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers for the period 2018-2025, including the results and key challenges of the initiatives and projects that have been and are being implemented.
The meeting also reviewed the results of the second self-assessment of AMS on the implementation of the ASEAN Consensus. Delegates acknowledged the progress and efforts in implementing the commitments under the ASEAN Consensus.
In addition, the meeting also discussed the recently adopted ASEAN Declarations on the Protection of Migrant Workers, as well as guidelines to turn commitments into concrete actions.
Delegates also agreed to review and update the partnership with the ILO and IOM, and explore cooperation in other priority areas, including enhancing efforts and initiatives to prevent human trafficking and exploitation of migrant workers, as well as promote safe and equitable migration in the region.
