Under the new policy framework, the national target will be 295,000 places for international students in 2026 - an increase of 9% compared to 270,000 places in 2025.
Notably, Australian public universities will be able to apply for increased international student quotas for 2026 by demonstrating closer engagement with the Southeast Asian region through training programs, partnerships, training facilities, alumni networks and scholarships.
Universities will also need to provide additional student accommodation to ensure both domestic and international students have safe and suitable places to live.
The Australian Government encourages universities to increase collaboration with Southeast Asia, in line with the Invested strategy (Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040).
Australia is currently the third most attractive destination for Vietnamese students studying abroad, with more than 33,000 students . Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Ms. Gillian Bird, welcomed this announcement and emphasized: "This is good news for Vietnamese students wishing to study at Australia's leading educational institutions."
According to Ambassador Bird, education has long been a cornerstone of the relationship between Australia and Vietnam, and new efforts to increase student numbers will help strengthen people-to-people links and promote investment in Vietnam.
