Ms. Ung Thi Hoa (70 years old), owner of a candy and jam shop with over 50 years of experience in the century-old Binh Tay market, said that jam and candy are indispensable dishes during the traditional Tet holiday of Vietnamese people.
Accordingly, traditional jams that are popular with many diners include coconut jam, ginger jam, pumpkin jam, lotus seed jam, etc. However, not everyone knows how to properly preserve this dish to keep the best quality of the jam when enjoying it, as well as ensure the health of family members.
Depending on the type of level, there are different preservation methods and shelf life.
Ms. Hoa said that the jam you buy needs to be carefully preserved. You should store the jam in a clean glass jar, dried completely in the sun. The jar must be airtight and you can sprinkle a layer of sugar on top of the jam stored in the jar.
This sugar will act as a moisture absorber, helping the jam to stay watery for longer, preserving it longer. “With these types of jam, you should not store them in the refrigerator because they are very easy to leak water. They need to be stored in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, and should be stored at room temperature.
Jams such as coconut jam, pumpkin jam, etc. can be used within 2 months. However, depending on the type of jam, there are different ways to preserve it, the shelf life of jams also ranges from 2 to 6 months depending on the type," Ms. Hoa added.
In addition, the owner also noted that each time you eat jam, depending on your needs, you can take a little at a time, enough to use. You should not take too much, because if you do not use it all, the jam will be exposed to the air for too long and will become weak, watery, affecting the quality as well as the taste when eaten.
