A poll conducted last week by Selzer and the Des Moines Register found that Vice President Kamala Harris is leading former President Donald Trump by 3 percentage points in Iowa. If the election were held today, 47% of voters in the state said Harris would win, while only 44% said the same about Trump. Trump was 4 points ahead of Harris in a September poll, and even 18 points ahead of President Joe Biden in June when he was still running for office. Iowa is considered safe for Republicans and is a state that Trump won in both 2016 and 2020 with more than 51% and 53% of the vote, respectively. The survey also showed a clear divide between male and female voters. While the female support rate for Ms. Harris is 56%, for Mr. Trump is 36%, the male support rate for Mr. Trump is 52%, for Ms. Harris is 38%. Ms. Harris joined the race for the White House in July after President Joe Biden suspended his campaign. The Vice President had a fairly favorable start with a record high amount of campaign donations. However, the race between her and Mr. Trump is still quite close. Both candidates are campaigning hard in the battleground states in the final days before the election. If she wins, Ms. Harris will become the first female president in US history. On the contrary, if Mr. Trump wins, he will become the first president in more than 130 years to serve two non-consecutive terms.
