Proud speech of the male student who won the International Olympic Gold Medal, now a student at a prestigious medical school

Male student won 2 consecutive Gold and Silver medals at the International Biology Olympiad

Within the framework of a series of activities to honor students who won prizes in the 2024 International Science and Technology Olympiads, the Ministry of Education and Training recently held a meeting and commendation ceremony in Hanoi.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Tien Loc, a student of class YK4, majoring in Medicine, Hanoi Medical University, expressed his pride.

Nguyen Tien Loc highlighted the role of Vietnamese education, which has long played a fundamental and strategic role in the country's sustainable development. Education is not only the foundation for the development of each country, but also the bond that connects generations and cultures around the world, becoming a beacon guiding humanity to overcome challenges and limitations.

In the short term, education is a resource that creates knowledgeable people with the capacity to directly contribute to the labor market and the progress of the country. But in the long term, education is the bridge between generations, building a talented workforce that is not only solid in knowledge and ethics but also rich in creativity and outstanding adaptability.

"Understanding its importance, we - the young people of the new era - constantly aspire to rise up, always ready to accept challenges and opportunities to learn. Major competitions such as the International Olympics or the Regional Olympics are wide open doors, bringing us to the world of knowledge and global integration. Looking back on my arduous journey, the IBO International Biology Olympiad has left a deep impression on me with two Silver and Gold medals in 2023 and 2024 respectively. These achievements are not only a source of priceless pride but also a great turning point, opening up a new and deeper worldview for me," Nguyen Tien Loc emotionally said.

Nguyen Tien Loc is a former student of the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences (University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi). At the 2024 International Biology Olympiad (IBO), Tien Loc was one of three Vietnamese students to win the Gold Medal. Previously, in 2023, Loc was the youngest member of the Vietnamese International Biology Olympiad team but excelled in bringing home the only Silver Medal for the team.

Sharing about becoming a new medical student at Hanoi Medical University, Tien Loc said he set a goal to continue maintaining his form and achieving the best results possible.

"In the long term, I want to become a doctor with heart, vision, and responsibility to the community and the country. I asked seniors and experienced doctors in the medical field to understand more about the specifics of the field of study. During the past summer, I also researched information online and oriented myself on what I need to do in the coming school years," Loc said.

It is known that before that, as a student with a strong personality, passion and great ambition, when he was in school, Loc always tried to accumulate experience and knowledge to learn and develop his thinking. The male student achieved many achievements in Biology at the district, city and national levels.

In addition, Loc also won the title of "Outstanding Youth" at the National University level in the field of study in 2023; received the Third-class Labor Medal "For outstanding achievements in the International Biology Olympiad in 2023; and was proposed as a typical young face of Vietnam in 2023.

A successful year for Vietnam in the international arena

In 2024, Vietnam had 7 delegations participating in international and regional Olympic competitions, with a total of 38 outstanding students participating. The results achieved exceeded those of previous years, with 12 Gold Medals, 15 Silver Medals, 10 Bronze Medals and 1 Certificate of Merit. Compared to 2023, there were 4 more Gold Medals and 3 more Silver Medals, affirming the strong rise in the quality of Vietnam's key education in addition to the mass quality.

2024 also marks the first time the Vietnamese delegation won second prize at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in the US , affirming the potential for the development of creative education in the field of science and technology.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Doan Long, Head of the 2024 International Biology Olympiad (IBO2024) delegation, expressed his confidence and pride: "Although the country still has countless difficulties, the practical foundation of industry, science - technology, education - training is still limited, especially for natural sciences and technology subjects, including Biotechnology (which has always been considered a unique strength of rich countries), the achievements of 8 Vietnamese student delegations participating in international and regional Olympiads, with a total of 38 participating students all achieving high results, is an outstanding result compared to the economic and industrial level of our country compared to many countries in the world".

"In Biology alone, in 2024, all 4 students competing achieved high results, with 3 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal, ranking 3rd overall, the highest overall achievement ever. This is the second time the team has repeated its achievement in terms of medals, but the difference is that this time there are all 81 participating member countries, including all countries with the world's leading Biology development, compared to 2019 (held in Iran) when only 56 countries participated and some developed countries, such as the US and UK, were absent," Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Doan Long informed.

To maintain the current results and continue to move forward, Mr. Dinh Doan Long reiterated the four principles of the international Olympic competitions: That is, to honor the most outstanding students, to encourage and stimulate the passion for scientific research and technological and engineering development of countries and around the world; for teaching staff and students to have the opportunity to establish new cooperation to jointly develop science and technology to solve global problems; for professions and social organizations to be awakened and more fully aware of the importance of each science subject for socio-economic development, ensuring security - defense, health, and happiness of each country and the world; for the education sector of countries to find a common voice on goals, methods, approaches and training programs, including for mass education and high-level education.
