The South China Morning Post on May 5 quoted a report released in China claiming that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) possesses powerful weapons capable of cyberattacks on other countries, including China.

The report was released by the China National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center (CVERC) and cybersecurity company 360.

The report focuses on multiple cyberattacks in China and says investigators have seized trojan programs, functional plug-ins, and attack platform samples that they believe are closely linked to the CIA.

“These cyber weapons have undergone a rigorous, standardized, and professional software engineering process that is unique to the CIA in developing cyber weapons,” the report said.

Accordingly, the targets of the attacks include critical information infrastructure, space, research institutes, the oil and gas industry, major internet companies and government agencies in many countries, with attacks dating back to 2011 and continuing.

The report also said the information collected would be provided to US policymakers for national security intelligence and security risk assessments.

At a press conference on May 4, in response to questions about the report, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said the US should stop using cyber weapons.

The CIA did not immediately comment on the report. Earlier in October 2022, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a warning, emphasizing the cybersecurity threat from China.
