The German goalkeeper will undergo back surgery. |
According to Sport , Barcelona are preparing an independent medical report that would state Ter Stegen's time off is four months. If approved by La Liga, that would allow the club to use 80% of Ter Stegen's salary to sign new players, a move that was used in the case of Andreas Christensen's injury to sign Dani Olmo last season.
In a statement released on July 25, Ter Stegen confirmed that he would undergo surgery and would only be out for three months, from late July to late October. This means that Barcelona are not eligible to activate La Liga's emergency salary mechanism, which requires a minimum injury period of four months.
Marca commented that Ter Stegen intentionally announced the injury recovery time as 3 months to prevent Barcelona from using La Liga's salary regulations, in order to make it difficult to register new player Garcia.
However, Stegen's public medical statement will not be considered by La Liga, as it lacks legal standing and has not been officially approved by Barcelona's medical team. Tensions are escalating between the German goalkeeper and Barcelona's board.
Ter Stegen is angry with the way Barcelona have treated him, especially since the club signed Joan García from Espanyol for €20 million. The German goalkeeper also refused to allow any medical team or Barcelona officials to accompany him to Bordeaux (France) for back surgery.
