Barcelona have officially been eliminated from the King's Cup after losing to Bilbao and coach Xavi's team only has two goals left: La Liga and the Champions League. Facing Villarreal, who have lost form, is considered an opportunity for Barcelona to continue their slim hope of chasing Girona and Real Madrid.

However, coach Xavi's team played deadlocked and let the opponent pressure the field. In the 41st minute, Gerard Moreno made a very quick kick after a pass from Alexander Sorloth, opening the score 1-0 for Villarreal and that was the result of the first half.

In the second half, Pedri, Joao Cancelo and 16-year-old Pau Cubarsi were brought on to help improve Barcelona's game. However, Villarreal unexpectedly scored in the 54th minute with a quick shot from Ilias Akomach, raising the score to 2-0.

Trailing by two goals, Barcelona had no choice but to attack. Ilkay Gudongan and Pedri scored in the 60th and 68th minutes to bring the match back to the starting line. In the 71st minute, defender Eric Baily scored an own goal to help Barcelona lead 3-2.

It seemed like Barcelona would win, but the drama of the match escalated. Substitute Goncalo Guedes equalized for Villarreal in the 84th minute after a great sprint and finish.

In the 9th minute of injury time, Sorloth took advantage of a lack of decisive clearance from Barcelona's defense to score quickly to help Villarreal lead 4-3. In the 12th minute of injury time, José Luis Morales sealed a 5-3 victory for Villarreal over Barcelona at the Olimpic Lluis Companys Stadium.

This defeat left Barcelona in 3rd place in La Liga with 44 points and 10 points behind arch-rivals Real Madrid after 21 matches. After Barcelona lost to Villarreal, coach Xavi Hernandez announced that he would resign at the end of the season.
