Barcelona gives number 10 shirt to Lamine Yamal, signs contract until 2031

(Dan Tri) - Barcelona has officially given the number 10 shirt to Lamine Yamal - the shirt number that Lionel Messi once wore and is considered by many to be the greatest player of all time.

"Messi has found his way, I will also do it my way, and the number 10 shirt is also handed over from Ansu Fati. I will try to find my way," Lamine Yamal shared during the signing ceremony of a contract until 2031 with Barcelona as well as officially receiving the number 10 shirt at the Nou Camp.

The number 10 shirt has previously been worn by legends Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo, but none have achieved as much as Messi, who has won the Ballon d'Or eight times.

However, the Argentine superstar left Barcelona in 2021 when he moved to Paris Saint-Germain and the number 10 shirt was given to young talent Ansu Fati. However, Ansu Fati failed to meet the club's expectations due to constant injuries.

Lamine Yamal is now considered a worthy successor to Messi as he played a key role in Barcelona's last two La Liga titles as well as helping the Spanish team win the Euro 2024 title.

Having made his first-team debut in April 2023, Yamal has made 115 appearances, scoring 25 goals and providing 34 assists in just two seasons. The Spaniard's talent has prompted Barcelona to quickly offer him a six-year contract, running until 2031, with a salary of 15 million to 20 million euros per season depending on performance.

Speaking on the club's TV channel, Yamal said: "I think the contract extension means I will stay at the club of my life, I will continue to enjoy and win, because I am at the best club in the world . I don't feel pressure; I am at the best club in the world."

Meanwhile, Barcelona also emphasized when signing the contract and giving the number 10 shirt to Lamine Yamal: "This is the next step in the journey to the top of La Masia's jewel. Taking on a shirt number that has great symbolic meaning in world football, especially at Barcelona, shows that Yamal does not hesitate when faced with responsibility.
