Tangerine is a very popular fruit and is loved by many people because of its aroma and sweet and sour taste. However, people often use the pulp of the tangerine without knowing that the peel is also a medicinal herb in Oriental medicine.
Accordingly, tangerine peel is very effective in treating bronchitis, indigestion, flatulence, etc. In addition, the essential oil in the peel of this fruit is also a very effective medicine for treating respiratory and digestive diseases.
Knowing these health benefits, Ms. Hoang Thi Thuong (from Quang Tri ) took advantage of the source of wild tangerine peel to dry it for use and sell it on the market.
She buys wild tangerines, peels them, freeze-drys them, and then sells them.
As someone who loves natural products, Ms. Thuong said she often reads and learns about natural products and their uses. She also happened to know about the health benefits of tangerine peels, so she decided to make her own for her family to use.
“I wanted to find a type of tangerine that came from nature, without pesticides, so I searched for tangerines picked in the forest. Luckily, I have a friend in Dien Bien who helped me buy wild tangerines and send them to me at a wholesale price that is not too high,” she shared.
Late last year, she started making dried tangerine peels to sell. She ordered all her friends’ fruit. She estimated that it must have been hundreds of kilograms of wild tangerines.
After receiving the wild tangerines, she will wash them and let them dry. Then, she will peel them off. “Unlike cultivated tangerines, this type of wild tangerine is very difficult to peel, the flesh and the peel stick together. My hands hurt a lot, and my hands were scratched because of peeling the tangerines. The tangerine peel is also quite thick, and the fruit is small, only a little bigger than a large kumquat, so it is also difficult to peel,” she shared.
Accordingly, every day, she peels about ten kilos of fruit. In other words, she has to peel several dozen kilos of fruit to get one kilo of tangerine peel. After peeling, she will freeze-dry it and pack it into 100 gram bags. "I don't weigh it exactly, but it takes about five kilos of fresh peel to dry it to get one kilo of dried tangerine peel to sell," she informed.
The selling price for each 100 gram bag is 100,000 VND. If calculated by weight, the price will be up to 1 million VND/kg.
Once packaged, she will post it for sale on social media. At the end of last year, she made a few kilos and sold them all. She kept a few bags for her family to use.

The tangerine peel is shredded and dried for easy use in steeping with pu-erh tea, creating a healthy drink.

She freeze-dried the other part and packaged it into 100 gram bags, selling it for 100,000 VND.
“I usually use about 1-2 pieces of dried tangerine peel. Then, I pour boiling water over the tangerine peel and leave it for at least 5 minutes, in which I can add ginger. When the water is still warm, I add a little honey to enjoy. With this method, I find that my throat will be less painful when I have a sore throat. It is also a way to improve the immune system,” she shared.
Up to this point, there are still some customers texting to buy tangerine peels for use, but she has run out of stock. According to her, wild tangerines are only available from December to February of the lunar calendar, so she can only buy wild tangerines during that time. Every time she finishes drying a batch, she sells out, and has no inventory left to sell year-round. Therefore, customers who want to buy more will have to wait until the end of the year.
