Frances Tiafoe defeated German player Daniel Altmaier, ranked 66th in the world , 3-0 (6-3, 6-4, 7-6) in the fourth round to reach the quarter-finals of Roland Garros for the first time in his career. His next opponent will be Italian player Lorenzo Musetti.
Tiafoe is one of the few players yet to lose a set in Paris and is confident of going further in the tournament. "I used to be a dark horse," Tiafoe told AFP. "Once I'm established and playing well, I'm dangerous. I can play against anyone. I think the sky's the limit for me."
Another player who has made it to the quarterfinals is Carlos Alcaraz (Spain). Entering the tournament as the defending champion, Alcaraz has had a series of impressive victories to reach the round of 8 strongest players in the tournament. Most recently, he won 3-1 (7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4) against American opponent Ben Shelton.
This is also Alcaraz's 100th win on clay and he will face another American player, Tommy Paul, in the quarter-finals.
Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul are the first American men to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros since the legendary Andre Agassi did so in 2003.
Sabalenka meets Chinese player Qinwen Zheng in the quarter-finals
Notably in the women's singles, world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros for the third consecutive time after a 2-0 (7-5, 6-3) victory over 16th seed Amanda Anisimova.
Sabalenka's opponent in the quarterfinals is Chinese female tennis player Zheng Qinwen (seed number 8). In the previous 7 confrontations with Zheng Qinwen, Sabalenka won 6 times.
