Hanoi: A 9-year-old girl with end-stage kidney failure, requiring dialysis 3 times a week, returned to normal life after a kidney transplant at the National Children's Hospital.
The child patient in Ho Chi Minh City, weighs 22 kg, much shorter than his peers. A year ago, the child was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure, accompanied by high blood pressure and heart failure, requiring dialysis 3 times a week at the Department of Nephrology and Dialysis, National Children's Hospital.
Dialysis can help children survive, but the quality of life is very low, with many life-threatening risks. Therefore, kidney transplantation is considered the only method to help children survive.
After nearly a year of dialysis, the child is healthy enough to have a kidney transplant. Three months ago, the patient was infected with worms, and doctors had to come up with the best treatment regimen to ensure the child's safety after the transplant.
"In particular, before the transplant, the patient's genetic test results are analyzed and compared with clinical results to eliminate causes of kidney failure due to gene mutations, helping kidney transplants have a better prognosis," shared Dr. Truong Thuy Linh, Department of Nephrology and Dialysis.
On March 11, two surgeries, one to remove a kidney from a living donor and the other to transplant the kidney, were performed in parallel. After 5 hours, the surgery was successful, the right kidney immediately after transplantation was pink, had good blood circulation, and began to produce urine.
MSc. Dr. Le Anh Dung, Head of the Department of Urology, said this was the 62nd successful kidney transplant since 2004. Kidney transplant techniques have been performed here proficiently, but each case will have different characteristics. In this case, the most difficult part of the transplant was that the connection between the donor's renal vein and the recipient's was too long. Therefore, doctors had to cut and reconstruct the two branches of the renal vein before reconnecting and transplanting it to the child.
One week after the transplant, the patient's condition was stable, he could urinate well, and was discharged on March 30.
