Previously, on March 17, Thong Nhat Hospital received a case of work accident, Mr. Tran Huu N. (born in 1981, from Buon Ma Thuot, Dak Lak province) in the emergency room with very severe multiple injuries (head and face trauma, cervical spine trauma, chest trauma, rib fractures, lung damage), cardiac arrest, and respiratory arrest.

Initially, the doctors of the Emergency Department successfully performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the victim, then transferred him to the Department of Surgery, Anesthesia and Resuscitation for monitoring. However, due to severe brain damage, Mr. N. was assessed as having potential brain death and the Hospital activated the Hospital's Organ Donation and Transplantation Association to meet and discuss with the victim's relatives. After a thorough explanation, the family agreed to donate tissues and organs when Mr. N. was brain dead.

The expert council met, examined, and evaluated the victim's brain death condition many times. On the morning of March 19, Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Le Dinh Thanh, Director of Thong Nhat Hospital, announced the patient was brain dead, and decided to begin surgery to remove tissues and body parts at 2:00 p.m. the same day.

The surgery to retrieve tissues and body parts from a brain-dead donor was performed by experts from Cho Ray Hospital, Hue Central Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, and Thong Nhat Hospital. As a result, 7 units of tissues and body parts were retrieved and quickly transported to hospitals for transplantation to recipients. Of which, 2 kidneys were transplanted to 2 patients at Thong Nhat Hospital, 1 heart and 1 part of the liver were transplanted to 2 patients at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, 1 part of the liver was transplanted to a patient at Hue Central Hospital, and corneas were transplanted to 2 patients at Cho Ray Hospital.

Up to this point, the organ transplants have been successfully performed, and the medical team of the hospitals continues to monitor the patients' condition after the transplant.

To show gratitude for the noble gesture of the organ donor and his family, the leadership of Thong Nhat Hospital assigned departments to organize a thoughtful funeral for the organ donor, bringing him back to his hometown for burial.
