On June 24, the UK government announced it would invest £1 billion (equivalent to $1.35 billion) to build a National Biosecurity Centre (NBC) to enhance its capacity to prevent and respond to future pandemics.
The new facility is expected to become operational in the 2033-2034 financial year and will be located in Surrey, southwest London – an area that already houses animal health research laboratories with high biosafety standards.
This will be part of an existing network of laboratories, playing a key role in the early detection of dangerous animal diseases as well as other biological threats.
The goal is to enhance early warning capabilities, coordinate responses, and mitigate risks from biological threats to public health and national security.
