Patient NKH, (female, born in 2019, residing in Dong Nai province) was hospitalized in a state of shock, with severe burns to the head, chest, thighs, buttocks and both arms.
After being treated for shock, given intravenous fluids, and given vasopressors at the Emergency Department, the patient continued to be actively monitored by doctors.
According to the family, at the time of the incident, the child was playing with friends behind the house. Because they did not witness the child playing with alcohol, the child was only discovered by relatives and the fire was put out on the spot when it caught fire.
Alcohol is a flammable and combustible substance. The danger of fire and explosion caused by alcohol is very serious. Alcohol burns are one of the common household accidents in children, occurring when children use chemicals, like to explore , learn and experiment. Most incidents occur when there are no adults around.
Faced with the consequences of burns, Dr. Ngo Hong Phuc, Deputy Head of the Burn and Orthopedic Department of Children's Hospital 2, has some information to advise parents. When discovering a child has a burn, parents should:
- Stay calm and remove the child from the burn area;
- Remove clothing or objects that cause burns if possible, but do not attempt to pull them off if they are stuck to the skin;
- Cool the burn by placing the burned area under running water at moderate pressure for about 15 minutes. Do not use ice or cold water directly on the burned skin;
- Use gauze, towel or clean cloth to cover the wound, prevent infection and reduce pain;
- Take the child to the nearest medical facility for further first aid and treatment. In the meantime, keep the child warm by covering or covering with blankets;
Note that when treating burns, you should avoid using folk remedies, python fat, fish sauce or toothpaste, as they can cause infection and prolong the treatment process.
Parents need to pay attention and be vigilant about chemicals that can cause fire, explosion, and burns. They should be kept out of reach of children to ensure their safety and avoid unfortunate incidents caused by burns.
