Baby girl born with four kidneys

VnExpressVnExpress18/01/2024

In Brazil, baby girl Isis Eloah Ferreira Alves was born with four kidneys due to a rare congenital defect that is difficult to find in medical literature.

Doctors realized Isis had a kidney problem while she was still a fetus, but they weren't sure what it was. Her mother, Thalia Silva Alves, 21, had a normal pregnancy without any problems.

Isis was born prematurely via Cesarean section at the Regional Hospital de Sobradinho and had to be placed in an incubator. When she was five months old and required surgery, doctors at the José Alencar Hospital of Criança de Brasília discovered she had four kidneys.

This is a rare condition, with fewer than 100 patients reported worldwide . An extra kidney is an abnormal branching of the renal cords in the embryonic wall during pregnancy. The extra kidney may or may not fuse with the other kidneys.

Doctors removed Isis's right kidney because of a blockage that caused urine to accumulate. This caused the kidney to enlarge, pressing on her stomach and intestines, making eating difficult.

The removed kidney could not be donated for transplantation because the abnormal blood vessels made implantation difficult. The kidney was sent for laboratory analysis. Isis's three remaining kidneys are functioning normally.

According to pediatric urologist Hélio Buson, the lead surgeon for Isis, it is not yet certain whether the remaining kidneys may have problems in the future. The girl will need to be monitored for many years, possibly into adulthood.

Isis is now 13 months old and is frequently hospitalized because each time she catches the flu, she develops pneumonia. Her lungs are very weak due to premature birth and the long-term use of sedatives. Despite these difficulties, Isis's mother says she is living a normal life.
