More than 150 local police officers conducted a land, air and water search but were unable to locate Nate.
Several roads were also covered with snow and blocked, hampering the search.
The boy had been following a trail on May 6, but when it ran out, he decided to stay. "Niemi thought it was best to stop, not go any further and wait for rescue," Michigan State Police said.
The boy was carried because he was too weak to walk after two days lost in the park.
Niemi survived by covering himself with branches and leaves and eating snow to stay hydrated. When he was discovered, Nate was two miles from the campsite. However, he was so exhausted that he could no longer walk and needed someone to carry him.
