Ca Mau General Hospital and Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital are the two hospitals selected to pilot electronic medical records from 2022. The hospitals have developed implementation plans in a number of departments and rooms and will continue to implement them throughout the hospital. Up to now, Ca Mau General Hospital and Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital have been assessed by the council as qualified to implement electronic medical records. Dr. Vo Thanh Loi, Director of Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said, “The issue of implementing electronic medical records has always been a focus of the hospital. Initially, we chose to pilot it in two departments and gradually implemented it throughout the hospital. The operating system has brought positive results, contributing to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment. The hospital will continue to support regional hospitals and medical centers to implement electronic medical records, contributing to synchronizing electronic medical records in the province.”

After developing a plan, investing in technical infrastructure and training human resources, on August 15, 2025, Dam Doi General Hospital was assessed by the Council as qualified to deploy electronic medical records instead of paper medical records. The hospital has met the prescribed criteria such as: The process of storing and sharing information ensures confidentiality and connectivity from the reception to treatment stage. Transmitting sharp images, serving the treatment work quickly without having to print films as before. Electronic medical records have been linked with the health insurance system to help reduce paperwork. The team of doctors and nurses have been trained to use the software, enter data and exploit information from the system. Nurse Thang Hoa Xuan, Nurse of the Geriatric Cardiology Department, shared, “Initially, there were many difficulties in implementing the program. After a period of implementation, I saw many benefits from electronic medical records. Previously, every morning, nurses had to summarize medical orders and then create a summary form, which took a lot of time and was prone to errors. With electronic medical records, all medical orders are digitized, I just need to open my phone or tablet to do it. Electronic medical records help shorten the time to spend more time caring for patients.” Doctor Nguyen Chi Thanh, Head of the Department of Emergency - Intensive Care and Anti-Poisoning, Dam Doi General Hospital said, “In the past, it was difficult to grasp all the medical records of patients treated in the department. When implementing electronic medical records, I only need a smartphone and can access them anywhere, anytime. From there, I can closely monitor the patient's progress to have timely and appropriate treatment directions.”

Previously, all patient data such as: X-ray films, test results, medical records were all paper copies, now converted to electronic data, facilitating hospital management. For patients, instead of having to carry many different types of documents such as: Citizen ID, health insurance card... now only need to use a smartphone . When implementing electronic medical records, doctors can look up the patient's medical history, test results and diagnostic images are performed with just a few operations on the computer. The entire treatment process is accurately stored, easy to retrieve to serve the purpose of medical consultation. Dr. Tran Quang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Health, said: “Recently, the Department of Health has directed medical facilities in the province to strengthen digital transformation, especially paying attention to electronic medical records. Based on the successful implementation at 02 pilot hospitals of Ca Mau General Hospital and Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, we will continue to deploy at the remaining medical facilities in 2025. When applying electronic medical records, it has promoted digital transformation in the health sector, moving towards smart hospitals, paperless hospitals. Secondly, when implementing electronic medical records, it helps doctors quickly exploit medical history, promptly update test results, and diagnostic imaging results to make timely treatment decisions, contributing to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment”.

By the end of August 2025, the province had 11 facilities that were assessed by the council to be eligible to deploy electronic medical records. The health sector will continue to accelerate the implementation of electronic medical records at medical examination and treatment facilities in the coming time. Electronic medical records bring many benefits to people, especially helping to improve productivity and quality of medical examination and treatment, aiming to build a smart medical system and provide health care for all people.
