IgA glomerulonephritis appears most commonly around 20-30 years old, and can be scattered from very young to old, with the male rate being 2-3 times higher than that of female. At Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City alone, in young patients, in addition to the causes of glomerular disease such as IgA, lupus erythematosus, drug-induced diseases... in biopsy methods of glomerular diseases at the hospital, the rate of IgA nephropathy accounts for 30-40%.

The cause of the disease in young people is due to abnormalities in IgA, related to genes. However, the triggering factor of the disease is infection. The infection can be respiratory, intestinal, urinary or from the genital system, if infection occurs, IgA disease will break out. However, some foods increase IgA in patients.

“If you wait for symptoms to detect IgA nephropathy, it is relatively late, because the disease can often be detected very early. For example, patients can have a urine test, at a later stage, the patient will have gross hematuria, which appears when the patient has a respiratory infection, often in the family there is already someone with kidney disease. In less common cases with proteinuria, the doctor may also think of IgA nephropathy,” Dr. Dan Thuy added.

The above symptoms are often not specific to IgA disease, so patients need to have regular tests to detect the disease early and accurately.
