Courtney Blake (27 years old) is a graphic designer in Leeds (UK). When she felt unwell, she went to the doctor for a check-up and discovered she had a rare tumor, according to the Daily Express (UK).
An angiomyxoma tumor that formed in her pelvic area forced Courtney Blake to have part of her bowel, bladder, uterus and entire vagina removed.
The type of tumor she had was called an angiomyxoma, a rare endocrine tumor that occurs in the pelvic area. This slow-growing tumor is benign and non-cancerous. Most people with angiomyxoma are women of childbearing age.
In most cases, the tumor develops in the pelvic or perineal region, with only a few cases occurring outside the pelvis. World literature began to record this disease in 1983 and to date only about 150 cases have been discovered.
In Blake's case, the tumor had been growing silently in her body for a long time. By the time it was discovered, the tumor was as big as a cantaloupe, with the longest part measuring about 10 to 12 centimeters.
In November 2022, doctors performed a 16-hour surgery to remove the tumor. Because the tumor invaded much of Blake's pelvis, to remove the tumor, doctors also had to remove Blake's colon, rectum, bladder, uterus, and entire vagina.
After the surgery, she spent a week in intensive care. In the months that followed, she underwent rehabilitation, a catheter, an ostomy, and other medical procedures.
Since her recovery, Blake has been working to improve her fitness. She is planning to run the Great North Run half marathon in Newcastle, England, in September. She is working hard to improve her fitness to complete the 21km race.
Her running companion was her fiancé, Mac (26). Blake planned to raise money for Cancer Research UK through her participation in the race, according to the Daily Express.
